Our new address: 8 Calle Del Caballo, Sandia Park, NM 87047 On North 14 (Highway 14), across from the Shell Station take Sandia Crest Road as if going up the sky area. Calle Del Caballo is the first road on your left and the studio entrance is the first gate on your right. It's very easy to find even though there is no signage allowed. What kind of yoga do you teach? | At Higher Altitude Yoga we teach a Vinyasa Flow Yoga style. But none of my classes are as intensive as a true Vinyasa Flow would be in a large city. In class I carefully sequence each yoga posture to a seamless flow to keep students focused on what their are doing. There is no time to get bored. Once Ujjayi breath has been learned and incorporated in class, students benefit greatly from this type of yoga and start gaining great focus, and fall into spontaneous meditation while practicing yoga. This type of flow is adapted to the different levels and styles of classes I offer. See class description page for more details or the online schedule. What is Vinyasa Slow Flow Yoga? Over the years I have developed a yoga style called: Vinyasa Slow Flow Yoga. It creates enough heat in the body to massage all internal organs and help them detoxify without exerting yourself, yet still getting a workout. Vinyasa Slow Flow is a gentler version of Vinyasa Flow, we still learn arm balances and inversions, as well as standing balances and it includes back bends, hip openers, strength & flexibility. It is a complete yoga class and a good workout. What are Revitalize Yoga Flow or Restore and Heal Flow? I felt the need for more Therapeutic approaches to my teaching style and developed two different yoga classes : Revitalize Yoga Flow and Restore and Heal Flow. These class are great for everyone including beginners. It helps heal injuries, promote recovery after surgery or time away from the mat, and also these are perfect classes to take for students new to yoga. Senior students love them. These classes have the right blend of yoga poses that will strengthen the body, add deep passive stretches, and keep the spine and overall body from arthritic pains. With yoga we feel better, healthier, limber, with a better mind set than without. 8 Weeks Yoga Basic RefresherHow long is a group class?
Beginner classes are usually 60 minutes such as Revitalize Yoga Flow on Thursdays. Tuesday & Saturday classes are 75 minutes, these classes are for more seasoned students and we tackle arm balances, inversion and explore more intricate poses that require a more thorough break down to help students achieve them. Check out the class Schedule page to learn more. How fit or flexible do I need to be to start yoga? If you are not flexible you will become flexible as you practice yoga. We start out stiff and completely transform over the months and years we practice diligently. Try Revitalize Yoga Flow or Restore and Heal Yoga if you are new or don't have any yoga experience. No matter how fit you are when you start something new you have to ease into it. Yoga requires different types of strengths not used in other disciplines and yet anyone can do it starting with a Refresher Beginner Yoga Series. What do I need to wear and bring to class? Wear workout clothing with spandex in them so they will give you full range of motion in the leg, in the arm + give you room to breathe deeply, which we do in class. Make sure your top is fitted, so it doesn't fall in your face when we are semi upside down. Bring a mat if you have one, if not, mats can be rented for $1 at the studio. Bring some water. Leave your shoes and cell phones outside the practice room. Is there anything I should not bring in class? Yes your cell phone! Leave it outside the studio in your car, or turn it off (silent & vibrate mode are not allowed). We strive to maintain a peaceful environment and keep the space clear from any radiation or EMF toxicity (Electro Magnetic Field). Do you chant in class? Usually not. But we will start or end class with one to three Om, you are welcome to join in if inclined to do so or just listen. Om will help calm the mind down and quell the many thoughts it likes to engage in. Om has a universal vibration that comprises all sounds. We are a vibration ourselves, each human has it's own, and to some we can be very loud without having to talk. I am allergic to perfumes and petrochemicals, is your space free of them? Yes. We ask that students come to class freshly bathed and refrain from wearing any kind of perfumes and even essential oils. We understand that most people today have developed an allergy toward perfumes and other artificial products so widely sold in our society. We also have an air purifier that is on 24/7. It cleanses the room of any odors but also of any allergens, viruses, bacteria, pet dander, dust particulates in the air. Our studio always smells fresh and feels wonderful. What can I expect from Vinyasa Flow class?
Expect to have fun and get a workout! Usually these classes are done in a warmer environment to allow complete detoxification and promote increase flexibility of the body. It is creative, dynamic, rejuvenating, calming, fulfilling, meditative and simultaneously allows everyone in class to explore new poses while in a safe setting. How do I know which level class to take? If you are completely new to yoga start with an easier class such as Revitalize Yoga Flow or Restore and Heal Yoga. In these classes you will get familiarized with the basics, get to know your body and how it moves. If you find it too easy then move on to the next level Vinyasa Flow. If you are an experienced practitioner in a different form of yoga it is best to test the waters with an easier class. Again you can be the judge of that. Check out the schedule to find out when these classes are available. Beginner classes do not mean they are for beginners only. Even with 25+ yrs of yoga experience and teaching; when I go to a new yoga studio that practices a different yoga style, I usually attend their beginner/intermediate class before moving up to a more advance one. This allows me to see where their class level is at. Levels will vary from studio to studio or from teachers to teachers. How should I prepare for class? It is recommended not to eat 1:30 hour before practice. If you are too hungry have a power bar, or a banana, or any fruits, a handful of nuts, and even a small smoothie. DO NOT COME IN CLASS WITHOUT HAVING EATEN ALL DAY OR ALMOST! you'll feel fainting and won't be able to follow. Have a light snack that will give you the energy you need for a 70 or 90 minutes class. Too much in your stomach will make you feel noxious or bloated and tired during class. Too little food will make you feel light headed, dizzy, and weak because your blood sugar levels are too low. If you know you have low blood sugar tendency, make sure to eat an orange or something 30 minutes before class. Food or liquids should not interfere with movement and breathing. Bring a yoga mat, bottle of water, small towel and turn off your cell phone! Can yoga help me "de-stress", get me more focused and reduce risk of diseases? Yes! Overtime you will develop a calmer mind and a more focused attitude through yoga Asana and breath control or Pranayam. Your mind will find a relief to life's many burdens and allow you to feel more at ease with yourself and others. The attention you bring to your breath synchronized with Asana/posture in Vinyasa Yoga Flow allows you to experience meditation effortlessly. Yoga is well known in the West now to help reduce heart disease, lower blood pressure, reverse or prevent osteoporosis, improve hormonal imbalance, realign your body structure, alleviate or remove chronic back pain. All of this is supported by medical studies. You can google any of these statement and find a study on it related to yoga and its benefits. One of my past teacher Ashram is a center where they study the effect of Pranayam on the brain, and the body. They have conducted 1000s of studies over the years and it prove the efficacy of yoga. Of course Yogis have known all along the benefits of yoga without needing proof of it on paper. All you need to do is practice it and see the difference for yourself. |
